The role of a nurse in a correctional setting

For nurses who thrive in fast-paced settings and are passionate about providing high quality, compassionate and non-judgemental care, correctional nursing can be an incredibly rewarding career choice.

As a GEO nurse your role will be diverse and dynamic, encompassing a broad range of responsibilities across your full scope of practice.

Nurse-led model of care

Correctional nursing provides you with the opportunity to work to your full scope of practice delivering high quality, nurse-lead primary health care services to people with complex health needs, as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The work is varied and provides you with opportunities to work with people with a variety of health conditions across the lifespan, deliver care in a complex operational environment, and make a meaningful difference to the health of people who access our services.

Nurse-led clinics

Provide daily clinics for patients with a variety of health conditions including acute illnesses and injuries; management of chronic conditions, mental health conditions and drug and alcohol conditions; undertake blood borne viruses, sexual health screening and treatment, provision of immunisations; completion of health assessments and development and implementation of care plans.

Sub-acute care
Some of our locations have sub-acute inpatient beds. These beds provide care to patients who require additional levels of care unable to be provided as an ambulatory patient within our usual clinics. This includes patients who are pre- and post- operative; requiring invasive medical devices; with complex wound care requirements, and who require support with activities of daily living.

Health promotion activities
Engage in activities that support people to promote their overall health and wellbeing, such as providing healthcare education, harm minimisation, supporting them to make healthy decisions about their health which support, and empower them to self-manage their own health conditions.

Multidisciplinary collaboration

You will work as part of a supportive team including medical, nursing and allied health professionals.

Coordinating and supporting access to healthcare

As part of our team, you’ll help in triaging requests for health services, ensuring patients receive the appropriate health services, treatment, and care in a timely manner.

Health care assessment and planning

Assess the health status and needs of patients to identify health conditions, track changes in health status, and determine the need for further care or specialist referrals.

Medication management

You will ensure the safe administration of medications to patients within the custodial environment supported by our dedicated team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

Emergency care

Respond to and provide immediate medical assistance in urgent or emergency situations.

Benefits of nursing in a correctional centre

Impactful care

You will be providing healthcare to people who often have limited contact with health services outside of prison.

Prison is often the first-time people have the opportunity to discuss their health needs with the health professional in a safe, non-judgemental environment.

Our patients often come from marginalised groups and face significant barriers to accessing health services in the community and can present with a variety of acute and chronic, physical and mental health conditions, as well as drug and alcohol use and blood borne viruses.

In your role you will be able to play a part in contributing to improving health outcomes both within and outside the custodial environment.

By addressing physical health needs and promoting wellness, in your role you will assist your patients to better manage their health, which may improve their overall quality of life and even support their reintegration into society upon release.

Professional growth

Our nurses gain experience in treating a broad range of health conditions, from chronic illnesses to infectious diseases, mental health conditions, and emergency care. The fast-paced, complex and high-pressure environment demands critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability.

You will be presented with opportunities to take on leadership roles such as managing a clinic, coordinating care teams, or mentoring other staff members which will pave way for career advancement and development.

Meaningful work

You will have the ability to make a difference in your patient’s life, bringing a sense of personal fulfillment and purpose.

Diverse patient population

Care for a diverse range of patients, including individuals with complex medical, psychological, and social histories. This will provide you with an opportunity to further advance your communication and interpersonal skills while learning to provide care that is sensitive to individual needs.

Specialised clinics and care

Specialised clinics for chronic conditions such as diabetes, mental health care, substance abuse and hepatitis will grow your expertise and contribute to areas of healthcare requiring specialised knowledge and skills.
