Arthur Gorrie
Correctional Centre:

Arthur Gorrie is Queensland’s largest correctional centre and its main remand centre, holding unconvicted prisoners for the period leading up to, and during their trial.

As a remand centre, most prisoners will stay at the centre for only a matter of weeks, if not days. For many of the prisoners at Arthur Gorrie, their stay will be their first experience of custody.

Our staff have been trained to proactively engage with prisoners at this delicate time so that they understand their needs and any risk factors, and so their remand period is one of safety, security and opportunity.

GEO hosts Transition Open Days at the centre to provide prisoners with one-stop-shop access to potential employers and organisations able to offer assistance after release. This initiative creative application of the GEO Continuum of Care model to cater to the needs of an ever-changing remand prisoner population.

Arthur Gorrie supports visits from prisoners’ families, friends and legal representatives. Arthur Gorrie also operates a video-court and works closely with courts, probation, parole, and bail authorities to help ensure only those that need to, are remanded in custody.

During their stay, the prisoners at Arthur Gorrie undertake a range of projects supporting community organisations including schools, wildlife sanctuaries and councils.

Arthur Gorrie has been continually managed by GEO on behalf of Queensland Corrective Services since opening in 1992.
